  18. <p>     It took the jury less than four hours to decide the
  19. sentence: death by lethal injection. If the judge ratifies the
  20. jury's recommendation next month, as expected, Faye Copeland,
  21. 69, will become the oldest woman in the nation on death row.
  22. Last week Livingston County jurors ordered the ultimate
  23. punishment for the Missouri great-grandmother for her role in
  24. the bizarre killings of five drifters to cover up a
  25. cattle-rustling scheme.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>     Authorities say that Copeland, with her husband Ray, 75, had
  28. hired the transients to buy livestock from local cattle barns
  29. with bad checks, resold the animals before the checks bounced,
  30. then silenced their unwitting agents. The victims were
  31. discovered on farms in northwest Missouri with .22-cal. gunshot
  32. wounds in their heads. The cattle scheme allegedly netted the
  33. couple $32,000. Prosecutors have also charged Ray Copeland with
  34. the murders, but his trial awaits the outcome of a competency
  35. hearing later this month. His lawyers claim that Copeland is
  36. senile.

  38. <p>     Even if last week's death sentence is upheld by the Missouri
  39. courts, Faye Copeland may yet be spared the lethal needle.
  40. Given the length of death-row appeals in the state--usually
  41. seven to 11 years--legal observers say it is more likely that
  42. she will simply die in prison of old age.
